Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair faults political bigotry

Prof Penina Mlama
Mwalimu Nyerere Professorial Chair in Pan-African Studies has expressed concerns over the ongoing political bigotry, saying the referendum which is just around the corner shall have serious effects for the forthcoming General Election.

Prof Penina Mlama, the chairperson of Pan-African studies expressed her concern yesterday when officially inaugurating Mwalimu Nyerere Ideal Forum at Makongo High School in Dar es Salaam.

She warned that failure to resort to Mwalimu’s principles the consequences are likely to be even greater.

According to her, public leaders had gone against what Mwalimu stood for and believed in people’s centred development, instead some leaders were prioritising their personal interests.

“The development we see today is not people’s development but rather properties. Today most of our  leaders are selfish ..… you can easily trace this though policy formulations,” she said.

Explaining, “Referendum has been coupled with endless tug of all between politicians. Everyone is in quest to promote his/her own interests and not people’s interests.”

She said such intolerance has severe consequences for the General Election slated for later this year.

Robert Magesa the forum chair speaking to The Guardian said they had resolved to establish the forum at the school to enable various youth to build and develop their leadership skills for the future generation.
“We want to build our patriotism and participate in national issues as youth,” he said.

At least forty youth comprising 25 boys and 15 girls agreed to establish the forum at the school according to Jenipha Maalamu, the forum secretary.
