The budget will also include gas to be used in laboratories of the
schools and each will need around 10m/- for the facilities, according to
the Kisarawe District Executive Director (DED), Mwanamvua Mrindoko.
He said over the weekend that the supply of gas, water and electricity is essential for the day to day running of the schools.
He explained: “Each school has three laboratories for physics,
biology and chemistry. If these get water, electricity and gas this
will to a certain extent help in improving the quality of education. The
labs were built recently by the community in collaboration with the
local government.”
The secondary schools that may benefit from the utilities include
Mzenga, Kurui, Maneromango, Gogoni, Msanga, Chole, Kibuta, Msimbu,
Masaki, Chanzige, Kimani, Mfuru, Vikumburu, Makurunge and Gwata.
The DED said so far 22 out of 39 laboratories have been
constructed, seven were almost complete while six are yet to be
constructed. She said among challenges facing the construction of labs
was lack of funds.
However, she noted that construction of the remaining six labs
would start once funds are received from other sources which she did
not disclose.
She said that each school is supposed to have three labs, each
costing at least 63m/- in construction, infrastructures and materials.
Mwanamvua said the council has requested the government to offer at
least 64 science subject teachers and three laboratory technicians for
each school.
“The government has promised to employ more science subject
teachers and that it will start providing one lab technician to each
school,” she said.
