Out of the total budget, 27.8bn/- is for recurrent expenditure
while6.1bn/- goes to fund implementation of various priority development
projects in the district.
Presenting the draft budget estimates to the Full Council earlier
this week, the District Council Planning Officer Pastory Mukaruka said
improvement of road infrastructure and improvement of primary education
would be given top priority in the financial year that commences in
July.
He said the improvement in the primary education would see pass rates increasing from the current 63 to 80 per cent.
Mukaruka said the money for development projects would be allocated
according to areas of priority with a view of boosting the economies of
the respective areas as well as improving social services there.
“The budget also aims at reducing poverty in the district by
improving people’s lives and enhancing good governance and
responsibility,” he said.
“We need to increase sources of revenue so that we collect more for the development of our district,” he went on to say.
“We as councilors must effectively supervise development projects
implemented in our areas in order to ensure they are up to standard,” he
said.
Earlier, Misungwi District Commissioner Mariamu Lugayila lashed out
at some of the councilors who he accused of refusing to work with
Village Executive Officers and even going to the extent of firing them
instead of presenting their cases to the appointing authority.
She called on the councilors to follow set operation procedures
whenever there are discrepancies with the Village Executive Officers
instead of usurping the powers of the appointing authority.
